Doing it like animals

Looking for the first part, I found out that this sequel existed and I decided to watch it. So, continuing with the saga, this time I’m going to talk about “An American Werewolf in Paris”.

This film was a co-production between several countries: the United States, France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Great Britain.

This time, the director was Anthony Waller, but in the credits it says that it is based on the characters created by Landis. It was released in 1997 and in 1998 it was released on VHS and DVD.

The film reproduces more or less the same topics as the first one, but it focuses on the love story and has a more explicit humor. It looks like an ’80s movie, but the special effects already incorporate some CGI and the music sounds more like the ’90s.

It was nominated for Best Song for Bush’s “Mouth” at the MTV Movie Awards.

I liked the initial sequence, showing the cathedral of Notre Dame in the rain.

Before we continue, spoiler alert: If you’re thinking about watching the movie, you should stop reading now.

The plot

Andy, Cris and Brad are three young friends, who go on vacation to France. One of their goals is to get girls, but Andy is more selective and prefers to wait until he finds the right one. His friends try to place bets on it, but Andy refuses. So they decide to make a new bet: they ask Andy to do bungee jumping from the Eiffel Tower.

So the boys manage to sneak into the facility, after they lock it. Andy prepares his equipment. His friends don’t think he’s going to do it, but Andy seems determined. While arguing they hear footsteps. They hide and spy on the person who has come to the tower. This is how they discover that she is a beautiful woman.

Love at first sight

The girl approaches, crying, to the edge of the balcony. Andy falls in love with her when he sees her so vulnerable. She pulls out a piece of paper, looks at it, and puts it back. She seems determined to jump. Andy tries to talk her out of it, but she jumps anyway. Because he already has one foot attached to the rope, Andy jumps after her to save her. The boy manages to break her fall, but the girl runs away, leaving only a shoe in Andy’s hand and the note on the floor. But that doesn’t matter for now, because the elasticity of the rope means that, going up, Andy hits his head on a beam.

Andy wakes up in the hospital surrounded by his friends. The first thing he thinks of is the girl: he is worried that she will try to commit suicide again. She asks her friends to go back to the park to look for the suicide note that she dropped when she hit the ground: there could be a clue there to find her.

As her friends leave, Andy sees her again, dressed as a nurse, walking through the corridors of the hospital. She carries a heart in a bag. Andy tries to follow her but loses her.

After a lot of searching, Cris and Brad find the note. Thanks to it, they find the girl’s house. When they go to see her to return the shoe, she puts out her hand to take it and they discover that her fingers are stained with a red liquid. Andy fears that she has tried again, but when he asks her, she says it’s paint. She is nervous and asks them to leave, but Andy is a man in love and tries his best. In the end, the girl dates him, but the date would be at another time and in another place.

The girl’s name is Serafine. The date doesn’t go very well and Serafine tells Andy that she doesn’t want to see him again, but Andy and his friends come back to her house. This time, a man named Claude answers the door. He seems friendly. Claude tells them that Serafine is not at home, but they can find her later at a party. Not seeing Serafine at the party, Cris decides to try her house again. Seeing a light on in the basement, he sneaks through a window and finds Serafine locked in a cell. When he tells her about the party, she says that his friends are in danger and asks him to open the door. Once free, she locks up Cris and goes to the place.

It is a trap!

The party turns out to be a trap set by a group of werewolves, led by Claude, to get prey and lock them there with them, on a night with a full moon. Serafine arrives in time and takes Andy into a tunnel. She throws him down the tunnel, tells him to run, and starts throwing stones at him. Andy leaves very confused, while she transforms into a wolf.

In the tunnels, Andy encounters a wolf that is chasing him. Is it Serafine? Andy wounds him with a four-pronged spear, which slows him down long enough for him to run away. He climbs into a smaller hole, but the wolf manages to bite his leg.

Meanwhile, Brad is killed by one of the wolves and Cris manages to escape from her cell. In the basement, he finds another wolf, with amputated legs, who was tied to a gurney.

Andy wakes up in Serafine’s bed and begins to hallucinate. Serafine explains that it is normal in the transition stage. She tries to explain that he was bitten by a werewolf and will soon transform, but Andy doesn’t believe her, yet.

Serafine’s stepfather was developing a serum to suppress lycanthropy, but when he tried to test it on her, as a side effect, she immediately transformed, killing her mother and turning her stepfather. Now his stepfather is bedridden on that gurney. Because of that, Serafine had tried to kill herself.

Andy meets Serafine’s mother, which is a terrifying experience, because now the woman is a specter looking like a rotting corpse. He also meets Brad, now a specter, who asks him to kill the wolf that attacked him so he can rest in peace.

The blondy

Andy begins to awaken his most animal instincts and seduces another tourist from the United States, who he meets by chance. He proposes to this blonde to have sex on Jim Morrison’s grave. Once in the cemetery, they try to have sex, but Andy feels too hot and throws himself into a fountain. Steam rises from the fountain and Andy emerges as a wolf (and in case you are wondering, yes, he shakes like a wet dog). The blonde ends up being the first victim of Andy-wolf and becomes another specter.

As expected, the specters that Andy killed ask him to take his own life. Andy asks if there is a way to become human again. Brad tells him that it will only be possible if he kills the wolf that turned him and eats his heart. Andy thinks it was Serafine and that’s why he won’t be able to do it.

Andy then meets with Claude, who reveals his plan to eliminate what he considers the “scum of society” and make werewolves the dominant species. Claude offers him to join them, but to prove his loyalty, Andy must kill Chris. Andy can’t do it, so he tries to escape. Serafine helps him and they manage to get away from Claude’s group, but when they return to the basement, Serafine’s stepfather is dying and there are no more samples of the serum left. Instead, Claude’s group left a flyer about a 4th of July party, “for Americans only”.

Independence Day

The couple think that the group will use the serum to transform, even if there is no full moon, and kill the assisting humans. They decide to go stop them. The police also go and a huge battle ensues inside an abandoned church, then in the catacombs of Paris.

Andy manages to kill the wolf that killed Brad. His friend thanks him as he disappears.

Serafine runs out of ammunition and uses the serum to be able to fight as a wolf. Andy finds her fighting another wolf and, since he doesn’t know who is who, he shoots, accidentally wounding Serafine.

The final battle

The girl returns to her human form and asks him to kill her to ease the pain and free from the curse. Andy can’t, and anyway, the police start shooting at him, believing he wants to kill her, so he has to run away.

Finally, Andy confronts Claude. Will he be able to defeat him and save his girl? You’ll have to watch it to find out.
