Does he look like a dead man with three eyes and bat wings? I want it now!

This time I will talk about a film that I saw long ago and I was happy to know that it recently entered the public domain: “Zontar: The Thing That Came from Venus”.

The film was made for television in 1967 and received mixed reviews. Larry Buchanan was its director. It is a remake of a Roger Corman movie called “It Conquered the World.”

Before we continue, spoiler alert: If you’re thinking about watching the movie, you should stop reading now.

The plot

It all begins when a scientist, with not very popular ideas, named Keith Ritchie, manages to communicate with a being from the planet Venus, called Zontar. Through some kind of radio, the creature speaks to him in a language that only he understands.

Zontar promises to change humanity. Ritchie agrees to help him get to Earth, by using a satellite, that seems to fall out of its orbit and mysteriously fall to earth.

As soon as it lands, Zontar takes refuge in a cave and causes sudden power outages: Electricity, phones, cars, even running water stops working.

Bad friends

In the midst of the chaos, Zontar spreads its bat wings and expels creatures, that look like a mixture of a lobster and a bat. These creatures transport the consciousness of Zontar and inject it into the necks of humans. The little being dies, but the victim becomes a slave of Zontar, who retains his memories, but has lost his emotions.

At first, Ritchie believes that Zontar is a savior coming to solve all of humanity’s problems. His friend, Curt Taylor, and even his wife, don’t believe him at first. But as they begin to see the effects of the conquest of Zontar, they see Ritchie as a traitor.

Only when his wife dies, in an attempt to take down Zontar herself, does Ritchie realize that he has made a mistake.

Thus, together with Taylor, he heads to the cave to confront his former master. Will he win? You’ll have to watch it to find out. It’s free!
